hortence is the research centre for Architectural History, Theory and Criticism of the Faculty of Architecture La Cambre-Horta of the Université libre de Bruxelles
The case study of Yona Friedman’s work in the 1970s and 1980s demonstrates that architectural discourses on ecology cannot be understood separately from engagement in development contexts. In particular, self-help manuals reveal a continuum of adaptation and negotiation: from more countercultural manuals aimed at Western audiences, to supposedly “universal” manuals commissioned by large intergovernmental organizations such as UNESCO and UNU, and finally to site-specific manuals addressing ecological issues, produced by local actors in the regions concerned.
