L’atelier UMBAU interroge l’incorporation d’ensembles architecturaux existants au sein des logiques de transitions économiques du Territoire et en réponse aux défis sociétaux et environnementaux présents et futurs. Dans le cadre d’une vision intégrale de la durabilité qui s’étend à différents niveaux d’échelle, la question de la réaffectation du bâti existant comme alternative à la construction neuve devient essentielle tout comme le choix des ressources et la Réutilisation des matériaux. L’atelier explore le projet d’Architecture comme une opération stratégique de réécriture d’une partie du territoire conçu comme un palimpseste dont la Mémoire est conditionnée par la stratification cumulative d’interventions d’époques et de rationalités différentes. L’existant est pris comme point de départ d’un passé inachevé. Par l’étude de références et l’observation de l’existant dans leurs détails et fragments, l’atelier aborde la Matérialité et la question énergétique comme une intention architecturale. Du point de vue de l’Empathie – la capacité de se projeter dans ou de se mettre dans la peau d’une forme objective – nous souhaitons interroger l’imbrication entre matérialité, composition, construction, espace et culture.

The design studio UMBAU (3d Bachelor and Master 1 & 2) questions the incorporation of existing architectural ensembles within the logic of the economic transition of the territory in response to present and future societal and environmental challenges. Within the framework of an integral vision of sustainability that extends to different levels of scale, the question of the reconversion and adaptive reuse of existing buildings as an alternative to new construction becomes essential as well as the choice of resources and the reuse of materials. This design studio of the ULB explores the architectural project as a strategic operation of rewriting a part of the territory conceived as a palimpsest whose memory is conditioned by the cumulative stratification of interventions of different eras and rationalities. The existing is taken as the starting point of an unfinished past. Through the study of references and the observation of the existing in their details and fragments, the workshop approaches the materiality and the energetic question as an architectural intention. From the point of view of empathy – the ability to project oneself into or to put oneself in the skin of an objective form – we want to question the interweaving between materiality, composition, construction, space and culture.
